Oh Say Can You C?

Two down and one to go. You have made it through the most tedious part of the course and only really have two big project: Movie & TaskStream to complete. We have a scanning assignment, EdTechProfile post, and attendance & participation!

This weekend we will work on the Movie project, which will revolve around the achievement gap and begin writing the TaskStream narratives.

Note: If anyone has a digital (DV) video camera, it would be a great help if you brought it on Saturday. The goal is to plan the video on Fri, shoot, capture and edit the video on Sat! Also, I want the first narrative for TaskStream written by Sunday evening and a request for feedback. You will be collaborating with your peers to ensure you are on the right track with your narratives!

I look forward to another productive weekend. . .see you tonight.

This week's question: What is your current favorite teacher movie and why?

I have many favorites but if I had to choose one it is Rudy. The story depicts someone who gets told all the reasons why he can't or won't be able to attain his dream (playing football for Notre Dame). It is a story about preservance and determination. The world is full of puddles to step in or road blocks to go through or over to get to your goal and this movie details the sacrafices and commitment to obtaining his goal. Great Messages!

My current favorite teacher movie would have to be Chalk!!! I think everyone should see this movie. Especially if you are going to be a new teacher (which we all are). It's kind of a fake documentary about a few new teachers. It's super funny!
At one point they have a spelling hornet. This is my favorite part in the movie. Teachers have to spell slang words that students use every day. I couldn't stop laughing.
Anyways, I think this would all be a great movie for us to see.
Go rent it!!!

OK, I really only get to see Disney movies these days, but I am going to rent "Freedom Writers" the minute I have some free time! I am totally inspired by teachers who are able to give hope to the hopeless. Because I am raising my own children in suburban North County, it's unlikely I'll ever teach in a place like this, but I admire any teacher with the guts and determination to give a future to those who otherwise wouldnt' have one!

Hi Professor Heil
I can not wait to make my own movie. My family is very interested to watch it. It is unbelievable. About my favorite teacher movie, mine is "Freedom writers" which is a very amazing and educational movie for me because it shows the real environment in some high schools, not only in USA, but also in most countries around the world. We had some of these problems in our countries in another shapes too. I like the method of managing the class by that teacher. She was very determined and serious. This movie prove that each individual can change no matter how long it takes and each student is special and needs specific method of teaching.
I am looking forward to make my own movie.
Thank you
Maryam

I liked attending the 422A and 422B and enjoyed completing the assignments. I look forward to completing this 422C also. I do not have a DV camera so I need to use the school camera to do my project.
My favorite teacher movie is called kindergarten cop because the teacher wants to really help the children. Even though it looked like a noisy classroom he was really interested in the safety of the students. I have met some substitute teachers that were there to help the students but couldn't keep the class from making noise and therefore they were asked not to come back to the same school. We need to really take time to investigate before we jump to hasty conclusions.

I recalled a great movie called, "School of Rock". It is a movie about a guy who takes his room mates identity and pretends to be a substitute teacher. It is a very humerous movie and I like it because it has a a cute moral of the story. This teacher has to basically make up his lesson plans. and all h really knows is music. Well, the students become very interested, and at the same time start to figure out that their teacher may be hiding something. I think the best part about this movie is that the music teacher brings out the best qualitites in the students. Ones who were unsure about themselves have confidence because of the substitute teacher. It is a very funny movie and would reccomend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, and I will look into more teacher movies.

I loved the 1995 Michelle Pfeiffer movie, Dangerous Minds. She was this White single lady looking for a substitute teaching job, in a low income area. Pfeiffer was surprised to obtain a full time position during her first interview. She was so ecstatic and excited, that she didn’t care what her co-worker friend was trying to explain to her about the students she was teaching. It turns out that her students were troubled. Most of them were minorities who came from low socio-economic backgrounds, and they had behavioral problems. Pfeiffer quickly won her students over, teaching them the importance of finishing their high school education. She came up with fun ways to entice her students to participate. For example, she would hand out candy, take them to the amusement park, and come up with class competitions where the reward was to accompany her to a fine dining experience. I was quite entertained by the movie, and find myself pausing to watch it anytime it is on HBO.

Hello everyone,

So I know that I already wrote in but I needed to write about another teacher movie. Instead of doing my homework tonight, I watched Half Nelson. A movie about a teacher who is a coke addict. I'll have to say, it was pretty disturbing. My roomie and I had to look away more then once while watching it. Only rent this one if you are okay with watching people do really awful drugs!!!
The story was good. It just wasn't all I wanted it to be. What I liked about this movie was how it shows how teachers do have an impact on their students lives. Be it good or bad, we will make a difference to kids out there. Yikes!!!

My favorite “teacher movie” is “Stand and Deliver”. It is about a high school teacher who motivated a class full of East L.A. teenagers to care enough about mathematics to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Tests . The teacher and the students challenged the assumption and biases that are held by mainstream authorities about disadvantaged kids, and proved them wrong. This teacher turned around the lives of these students, and showed them a path to success. All the students got accepted in good universities and that is why this is my favorite movie. I hope I can make a difference, like the math teacher in this movie!!
